Oregon is constantly striving to server its members to the best of their ability. As part of the service, we provide this website to distribute information and resources to run our sport. We also publish an annual Swim Guide, a book full of standing rules, time standards, records and team information. Until recently we also published a newsletter every 6 months.

As technology improves, we look at new ways to utilize what we have available. As the website became the primary information source and the information in the newsletter was dated, Oregon Swimming decided that newsletter should be scaled back first in it's hard copy form and then discontinued altogether.

The newsletter provided something that the website could not, a place for our board members and general membership to publish articles with relevant information about our sport. And so, we have developed this blog to fill that need.

As we were building this site, one of the key features the board requested was the ability for our membership to subscribe to the various blog topics. You may subscribe to any of the blog topics by entering your email address in the subscription section on the right hand side of the page. The system will send you a confirmation message with a link to follow. If you do not receive this email, make sure your spam filters did not remove it. Of course, you may enter your email address as many times as you want until your email address has been confirmed. By subscribing to the blog, you will receive an email anytime someone posts a new entry for that particular topic.

RSS feeds have become a very popular way for end users to keep up to date on their favorite websites ... and we certainly hope the OSI website ranks up there with the others. We have provided an RSS feed for each of the topics as well as a combined feed for all the topics. Click on the on the right hand side of the screen to see a list of available feeds.

As always, we encourage our membership to give us feedback on the site. If there is anything we can do to improve this site, or something doesn't work as expected, please email Robbert at webmaster@oregonswimming.org.

A Request for Pool Pictures - 6/23/2008

Over the years of developing the Oregon Swimming website, I have tried to keep the site as informative and easy to use as possible. The clubs section provides our members and prospective members alike a list of clubs and where they are located using a combination of old fashioned writing and newer technology like Google Maps.

It goes to reason that each club has at least one pool, whether we have it posted on the website or not. As an on-and-off again competitive swimmer (I'm currently into my fourth retirement) and former coach, I have travelled to a vast majority of pools in the LSC for swim meets. Whenever I needed to go to a new pool, I used the information on the website to find the pool. I can only assume that I am not the only one.

It was my trip to Lincoln City a year ago to coach at a meet there that made me realize that there is one piece of information missing for a pool. Nothing against Lincoln City. They have a beautiful pool with a newly remodelled exterior if memory serves. However, I had a difficult time finding it in part because I didn't know what the exterior looked like. I'm a very visual person and while the directions got me to the general area of the pool, I drove by it a couple of times before I realized that I was there.

This experience led me to think that having a picture of the facility on the club page would be a nice addition, both on the club page and on the Find Clubs section. If you look there now, you'll see that I have included a space for a picture of the facility. Since I have none yet, each pool has a generic No Image Available graphic.

I am putting out a call to get a picture of your team's pool. A high-quality, exterior shot would be preferred. However, I will also take interior shots, or both. Feel free to send me several if you have them. Please send the picture to webmaster@oregonswimming.org.

Changes to the Times Database - 6/28/2008

The Oregon Swimming times database is one of the more popular features of the website consistently ranking in the top three sites along with the home page and the results page. Over the past 7 years, the database has grown to include 1092 meets and 837,437 individual results. That's 837,437 real, individual results, no relays, no disqualifications and no swims are included in the database. The times database has been modified to work better with the sheer number of results. At the same time, several new features have been added to enhance the reports and search capabilities of the site.

When clicking on the meets list, all one thousand meets would be listed, making for a very long page and for our non-broadband users, a long download. The page has been split up to show only the meets from a selected season. At the top of the page is a list of available seasons.

I never really liked the way the teams and athletes list was formatted. The page was clunky, took a long time to load and generally didn't look good. I have changed the way the page is formatted, showing the list of teams in the database on one page and the list of swimmers for that team on a second page.

With over 800,000 results in the database from 7 years of swim meets, you can imagine that the amount of data is immense. In the past, you could only see results by division, but I've always wanted to look at all the times for myself in the database in one page. I figured others would be interested in seeing the same, so I modified the top times lists, both by event and by athlete, so that you may select a specific season or all seasons at once.

The final change to the site is the way the search page works. I've included a new, AJAX enabled search feature. Before, you had to enter both a first and last name to perform a search. I have changed the form to include only one field. You may enter all or part of a last name and optionally include the first name. As you type, the site begins to populate the search results as you type. This feature has been tested on FireFox and Internet Explorer 6. If you have trouble, the find button will still work. Also, feel free to send me an email and let me know what browser you are using so that I can get it to on your browser.

Problems with the Times Database - 7/1/2008

Recently, I was made aware of a problem with the times database. Several people had pointed out that several Unattached swimmers were credited swimming the wrong team while the results showed they swam for the correct team. After some investigating, it appears the problem lies with Team Manager.

I use Team Manager to import results and then use another program to export the results to the website. That's why results don't always show up in the times database the same time they appear in the results section. We recently upgraded to Team Manager 5, and while the latest updates are installed, when importing results, Team Manager is assigning the unattached swimmers to the incorrect team.

I am working on the solution but it may take a week or so before the problem is resolved. In the mean time, if you come across a swimmer assigned to the wrong team, please email me the name of the swimmer and the meet. I haven't seen any issues with the times, just the team, so the issue should not interfer with the top times and qualifiers list.

Just some quick notes about the website.

The issues with the times database have been corrected for now. However, I'm not convinced that the issue will not resurface in the future. As always, please email at webmaster@oregonswimming.org if you find an error in the times database.

The times database was recently updated but do not include the full results from the Olympic Trials and the Summer Blast #2 meet. I am working to get those updated this weekend.

I keep track of all the searches performed on the website so that I can determine that the content available meets the needs of our visitors. One of the more common searches performed lately is for Senior Sectional psyche sheets. MHST is posting these on their website.

Finally, updates to the website will be a bit sparse for the next three weeks while I, along with my fiancée, finish up plans for our wedding and go on our honeymoon. The OSI office will be monitoring my email and uploading results to the USA Swimming database. Results and the OSI times database will be updated after I return.

End of the Season Top Times Lists - 9/2/2008

It's that time of year again. The season's meets are over and the process to generate the top swims lists has begun. While computers have made the job much easier, we still rely on you, the parents, coaches and swimmers who go to the meets and actually know what happened to provide us with accurate information. If a meet is missing from either the Oregon Times Database or the USA Swimming times database, please let me know immediately so that I can get the meet added to either system.

I just recently posted the preliminary Top 10 list from USA Swimming. USA Swimming decided to create single age group Top 10 lists instead of the old dual age group Top 16 lists. Please take a moment to go through the lists and send corrections to me at robbertv@oregonswimming.org. I will make corrections to USA Swimming's times database as the errors come in.

The Oregon Top 5 lists will be produced in the coming week and posted in the Top 5 section in the times database. While we maintain our own database, Top 5 uses the USA Swimming database. Only swims produced while competing for a USA Swimming club or All Star team will be included on the list. High School times will not be included as in previous years. Just as the Top 10 list depends on your corrections, so to does the Top 5 list. The Oregon Swimming office manager, Coby, updates this list once it is posted, so please send corrections to her at swim@oregonswimming.org.

Top 5 Preview and the Future - 9/27/2008

It's been a few weeks since I posted the 2007-2008 Top 5 lists. This is the second year that Top 5 was created exclusively using the times database to generate the reports. Most of the errors I've received so far are either caused by errors in the export program and how it deals with ties for 5th place, while a few others are actual wrong times caused by relay lead off swimmers swimming in the wrong order or other swimmers touching the pad before the lead off swimmer is done.

I'd like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone with a vested interest, parents, coaches and swimmers, to review the Top 5 again and let us know if there are still errors. I'm encouraged that the number of errors this year has been small but at the same time worried that the lack of corrections is caused by everyone assuming that the computer cannot be wrong. If you find any errors, please contact the office.

As we move forward into the next season, I want to restate my annual request that as you, the parents, coaches and swimmers, attend meets, take a few minutes out of the day to review the results that are posted on the walls. These results are posted not only to let you know how a swimmer has placed, but also to provide a means to review results. There's nothing more frustrating that to receive a set of results, upload them to the various database, only to get an email a few days later that there is an error in them.

While at the meet, double check your swimmer's name, and if possible their birthdate and USA Swimming number. These values are used to match a swimmer's result with the swimmer in the USA Swimming registration database. Errors can result in delays in getting the meet posted as well as potentially having the result deleted all together. Also, double check the results from relays and make sure that the order of swimmers is correct and that all four swimmers are listed. USA Swimming will not accept relay results if not all four swimmers are listed with the result.

Taking a few minutes out of the day to review results at the meet will help us all get results posted accurately and in a timely manner.

Update from the House of Delegates - 10/20/2008

Our web master, Robbert van Andel offered me the ability to start to post a blogg on the OSI web site at regular intervals to communicate what is happening within OSI. Although I thought it was an excellent idea at the time, I have been extremely tardy about actually doing anything with it. In an effort to correct that, I will start off with a report from our House of Delegates held in Salem earlier this month.

A number of key measures were passed which will ultimately affect all the swimmers in Oregon Swimming.

The first, which will perhaps have the smallest impact is the Tier III funding for OSI travel reimbursement. This reimbursement was introduce when the Junior Nationals meets were abolished by USA Swimming a few years ago. The rational at the time was that Tier III funding would assist athletes to continue to find high caliber meets to compete in outside of Oregon as they continued their progression towards the National level meets.

USA Swimming has now reintroduce 2 Junior National meets back on the competition calender, so the original justification for Tier III funding is no longer valid.

The Oregon House of Delegates voted to allow any athlete who qualifies for Tier I or Tier II funding, but does not attend the respective national meet to still receive the current Tier III funding amount ($250) to assist them to go to any meet of their choice.

Following a recommendation from the OSI Board, and numerous discussions about OSI's current cash flow deficeit, the membership approved the following fee increases:
1.) Increase the annual registration fee by $5.00, effective for the 2010 season.
2.) Increase the current athlete meet surcharge from $1.50 to $3.00, effective January 1, 2009.
3.) Increase the current OSI Championship surcharge from $4.00 TO $10.00

Addittional cost cutting measures approved by the HoD are:
1.) Reduce the Zone team travelling to Hawaii this year to a maximim of 8 athletes per age group/sex
2.) Reduce the number of coaches travelling with the Zone team by one.
3.) Reduce the number of chaperones travelling with the Zone team by one.
4.) Reduce the amount of reimbursement for OSI delegates travelling to the USA Swimming convention each year by a graduating percentage based on the position held by the delegate within OSI.

It is unfortunate that after many years of holding our fees levels the same, we are now forced to increase them as the economy takes a pause. It was only after previous cost cutting initiatives failed to reduce our expenditure below the level of our income that these measures became necessary. As we move forward the OSI Board will continue to work with our membership to find other ways to increase the level of service and competition we provide to our athletes, while reducing the cost to provide those services.

I will comit to post an update on this blogg after every OSI Board meeting in order to ensure everyone has an opportunbity to stay abreast of the news and current events within OSI.

Yours in swimming
Mark Rieniets

I hope I am not setting a pattern here, but with one blog on the web page, I am already posting a retraction!

The motion which was passed at the HoD for the Zone team was to send 60 swimmers. There was no limitation on the number of swimmers from each age group, as it will be left to the Zone Coach and Team Manager to pick the best and strongest team available to represent Oregon.

Sorry for any confusion or anxiety I may have cuased.

Top Relays - 10/22/2008

It seems this blog should be renamed the times database blog. With so many changes happening to the times database these past few months, there is just a lot to write about. This entry is dedicated to the latest feature to be included into the times database. After 7 years of developing and tweaking the times database, I have finally gotten around to adding relays to the database, thus fulfilling one of my goals for 2008.

On the times database webpage, a tab directs you to a page similar to top times. You can enter your search parameters similar to the times database. You may notice that the list of seasons goes back as far as the top times lists do. I will fix that in the future. For now, just realize that the times database will include relays only from this season forward. The list of relays will include the team name, time, members and meet. Each swimmer's name is a hyperlink to the swimmer's individual top times for the season. Scroll to the bottom to see the swimmer's relays.

I had debated on including the relays on the individual's top times page because of concerns about incorrect data, as relays are the cause of most correction requests sent to me. In the past, corrections were typically needed because the relay's lead off swimmer was incorrect. I can only imagine that now that all four relay swimmers will be known, this may compound the problem. Please be aware that I cannot change results. What I put into our database comes from USA Swimming's SWIMS database which gets its data from the meet results submitted to Oregon Swimming. I hope this will encourage everyone, parents, swimmers and coaches, to be more observant of the results before they are finalized. As I have mentioned in previous blogs and news articles, I want to encourage everyone to look at and correct the results as they are posted on the walls of the pool before you leave the meet.

As I mentioned, the data going into our times database comes from SWIMS. USA Swimming will not allow us to import results from a meet when one or more relay swimmer is unknown. If you notice a relay is missing from the list, the cause is most likely due to a missing relay swimmer from the results. Again, this can be resolved if the results are corrected before they are sent to Oregon Swimming. USA Swimming also does not recognized 100yard relays, and so they will not be included in our database either.

November Board Meeting - 11/6/2008

The key focus of the November OSI board meeting in Eugene remains our cash flow shortage at this time. The OSI Board decided to pay out 50% of the remaining balance of the travel reimbursement outstanding from this year.

As more of the OSI investment CD's become due we will continue to draw down the balance of OSI's investments until the full travel reimbursement amount has been paid.

The board also agreed to review any outstanding balance from travel reimbursement at the January board meeting in Portland. If a combination of our income and CD's maturing do not permit us to pay the remaining balance of the travel reimbursement, then the board will examine the possibility of incurring the cost and cashing in some of the CD's invested early in order to fully meet our commitment.

As the increase in splash fees and surcharge take effect on January 1st, we are hopeful that we will move past the current cash flow deficit, but a number of measures are being taken by the board in order to allow us to more closely monitor our expected cash flow in a more forward looking and less reactionary manner.

After some discussion, it was also agreed that due to lack of attendance, the OSI Board would no longer meet in Eugene twice a year. Beginning next year the OSI Board will meet in Eugene in May, with the remainder of the meetings taking place in the Portland area.

A number of changes to OSI policy and procedures were agreed to which will clarify the OSI reimbursement policies. The intent and/or the reimbursement practices will not change, but the OSI Handbook will now contain clearer verbiage on a number of reimbursement entitlements when it is available early in 2009.

The committee of coaches continues to review and discuss a proposal for adoption by the OSI board to document and formalize the meet development hierarchy for our swimmers with the Oregon Swimming area. Once this review has been completed and adopted, we will be in a stronger position to determine if our travel funding and reimbursement are in alignment with our development strategy for our athletes.

Last but not least, our OSI Top 5 Awards ceremony will be in Canby on November 23rd. The invitations for this have gone out from the OSI office this week. If you believe you or your athletes should have received an invitation and did not , please contact the OSI office immediately.

Yours in swimming

Mark Rieniets

All Star Meet Results - 1/22/2009

I've been getting a lot of emails about out of state meets being included into our Times Database. I want to thank everyone for letting me know when your team travels to another LSC for a meet.

Many of the emails I've received concern the All-Star meet held on January 10th in Federal Way, Washington. This meet has not been added to our times database but will as soon as possible. Our times database is derived from USA Swimming's SWIMS database. All the results I import into our database is first imported into USA Swimming where results are cleaned up, and swimmers are validated against the registration database. Each LSC is responsible for uploading results into SWIMS as soon as possible and only the host LSC can upload results from their LSC.

As of this morning, Pacific Northwest Swimming, the hosts of the All Star Meet has not uploaded the results from All Star meet nor the Senior Circuit meet held the first weekend of January. I will continue to monitor SWIMS for the addition of these meets and will also continue to email Pacific Northwest Swimming to get a status of these meets. Eventually, these meets will get imported and we'll get them added to our database.

In the mean time, I want to thank everyone for their patience.

The good news is that we have finally stopped drawing down on OSI investments to make payments for the travel reimbursement. All the travel reimbursement which is eligible for reimbursement for 2008 has been paid, and we have no outstanding claims at this point.

Under the current market and economic conditions, it will obviously take us many years for us to get the investment balances back to where they were a few years ago, but we have stopped the bleeding and can now start the rebuilding process.

As part of this rebuilding process, the coaches committee being chaired by Mark Burnett has been evaluating and discussing what should be eligible for travel reimbursement, and how much. The target is for this committee to have a proposal which will reach consensus at the OSI House of Delegates in 2009. Please give your input to Mark or the other coaches on the committee. Where ever money is concerned, everyone has an opinion, usually geared towards ‘giver me more’. The reality of the situation is that we must look at this from an OSI LSC wide perspective and not just ‘what does it mean for me’. This is a challenge which the current conversation has been exceptionally quick to embrace, as I am sure everyone will, once the final recommendation has been formulated.

Since we are once again approaching High School State meet time for swimming, the questions has once again arisen of should OSI recognize record times swum in the High School competition if the swimmer is registered as an OSI swimmer. Jim Bowe is heading up this discussion as part of his TPC Chair duties, so please provide your feed back to him so he can formulate a solid proposal which addresses both the issue moving forward, as well as the historic swims and records.

Lastly, I have heard that numerous officials have started including the potential change to the wording and infraction called on the back stroke turn into the officials briefings before our swim meets. This is not something I intent to expand on here, except to express a strong caution. Our officials should not be announcing changes to any rules of procedures unless they are either printed in the USA-S rule book, or the communication comes through Bob McMillan in his capacity as Officials Chair. Similarly, if any official has any questions or uncertainty, they should be contacting their Area Officials Chair who will pass on the concerns and questions to Bob if he has not already communicated to them on a particular topic. Although Bob is relatively new to the Officials Chair role, he has already established strong communication lines with the officials echelon within USA-S and will be able to answer or get answers to any and all questions.

Yours in swimming

Mark Rieniets

I just wanted to thank all the Oregon teams who sent swimmers to the Zone meet this past weekend. We placed 3rd in the team standings with absolutely the best kids around. All of the coaches cannot say enough about how respectful and fun this group of athletes was to work with at the zone meet.

They also swam great! The following swimmers scored in the top 10 on the high point list: Mackenzie Rumrill, Allie Rasmussen, Joseph Murphy, Celia Keany, Kathleen McCarroll, Brandon Deckard, Scott Bergstrom, Sheila Stocks, Emma Dow, Sarah Reierson, Matthew Chauvin, Chris Weinert, Brooke Collins, Kelly McGrath & Michael Hargitt.

Team Oregon set 2 new Western Zone Age Group records. A new Zone 200m Medley Relay record of 2:03.36 was set by Kathleen McCarroll, Brie Balsbough, Julia Sanders & Celia Keany. A new Zone 200m Freestyle Relay record of 1:50.07 was set by the relay team of Julia Sanders, Briana Balsbough, Breanna Sapienza and Celia Keany. Well done girls!

The Open Water swim on Sunday in Waimea Bay on the Northshore of Oahu was a stunning experience for many of the swimmers who had never done an open water swim before. And learning how to catch a wave in the surf in Waikiki was a fantastic new experience for many of the coaches and swimmers alike.

The athletes did a great job learning to get along with their new Team Oregon teammates, cheering for each other in finals, working with new people, learning ‘meat’ cheers, and swimming great races even when tired. A huge thank you to Heather Thomas, our Zone Manager, for her unwavering positive attitude, her ability to make friends with every team at the meet, and for the way she was so perfectly able to capture the Hawaiian accent of all the vendors we worked with. J Thank you to our coaches Tim Hamlet, Jeff Scheidler, Gina Dhom and Jill Black for their great work with the swimmers, and to our chaperones Paige Lee, Dana Balsbough, Janet Dow and Victoria Wells who worked very hard all week long at the meet keeping track of kids – doing store runs, doing laundry, and all the other assorted tasks that are necessary to keep the team running.

And Mahalo to Julie Carpenter, Julia Murphy, Debby Bergstrom, Renee Webb and Wah-Ying Kwong who flew to Hawaii to help officiate from Oregon.

Swimmers - you’re the best. Thanks for the great swim meet!

-Shelly

In Response to 20/20 - 4/13/2010

This email was sent to Chuck Wielgus in response to the recent 20/20 report on sex abuse by swim coaches. We are posting it in it's entirity as good information for clubs to follow when making hiring decisions.

Hi Chuck,

I wanted to take the time to personally thank you for your letter to USA Swimming coaches. As the head coach of a club that has a former coach on the current banned list, I want to tell you that my experience with USA Swimming regarding this person's conduct was overall a positive one. When we initiated our original complaint against this person, we had already let him go for non-performance of job duties, but there were certain things about his interaction with teenage girls that had bothered me. It wasn't until after I let him go that parents came to me with similar feelings, thanking me for taking appropriate action in letting him go, and asking if they could report him to USA Swimming. These feelings were based entirely on inappropriate comments and creepy stories he would tell our swimmers, and thankfully, not on actual sexual contact. I was sure that the things that parents, other coaches, and myself had observed were certainly objectionable, but I doubted that they were criminal. However, we as an organization felt that we had to at least let our governing body know of our issues. USA Swimming representatives took our complaints seriously, and followed through in a timely manner. An investigator was sent out to meet with members of our coaching staff and swimmers and parents who had brought their complaints to me. I was impressed with this investigator's thoroughness, and tenacity in tracking down whatever information he could. When I was informed later that this individual had "agreed to the terms of a lifetimetime ban from coaching kids of any age" I knew that it could not be because of what we had reported, but rather because of what this investigator eventually turned up at this coach's previous club. To this day, I do not know what this conduct was, but I can only surmise that it was serious if it warranted a lifetime ban.

In the course of the investigation, though, the following two things became painfully clear to me:

1)The background check administered by USA Swimming is only the tip of the checking we must do when hiring a new coach. He had lied to me about the reasons for his leaving his previous club in his interview and on his resume. If I had just checked with his prevous club, I may have learned the easy way that he was lying to me. But since I had to hire him on very short notice, and his resume seemed very good, I did not follow through on that. That fact haunts me every day. I was glad to see you address this issue in your letter, and I can't stress enough the importance of doing a thorough background check of your own when hiring any coach.

2)Keeping our sport safe for all kids is the responsibility of everyone involved in club swimming, and not just our governing body. I feel that we had a responsibility to the organization to do what we did in reporting this individual, and I have never regretted doing so, even though it caused us some share of heartache, and we lost swimmers who followed this coach to a new club prior to USA Swimming's actions in banning him for life. I can't help but feel betrayed by his previous club's actions in letting this coach go but not informing USA Swimming of any misconduct that occured. No matter what really happened- and I have only ever heard rumors, I still do not know what occurred- by not reporting his conduct to our NGB, they let a sexual predator continue as a coach, and put our kids at a grave risk. I do not believe his actions ever progressed beyond the verbal while with our club, but I can never know for sure. By not reporting this individuals behaviour, this other club did our club and USA Swimming a huge disservice. I thank God every day that we were able to right this wrong, and take the appropriate action in getting this individual out of our sport. But I will never forget that another club had the same opportunity to do what we did and chose not to. I am very glad to see that you addressed the importance of reporting in your letter, and I feel that this simple act would have saved us all some trouble.

I did get a chance to view the 20/20 report, and felt that it was sensationalized to the point that you and our sport were indeed portrayed in a bad light and the truth was secondary. But if it makes us all more aware of our duties and gets even one more coach off deck that shouldn't be there, then it was worth it. Your letter is the first I have ever seen that thoroughly addressed the options and duties that each club has in keeping our sport as clean as possible from sexual predators. It is certainly time such a message was sent, and I appreciate your efforts. I also strongly encourage the formation of both a hotline and a blacklist as soon as possible. I think these are both very good ideas whose time has certainly come.

Please feel free to use any or all of my letter as an example of how USA Swimming was instrumental in helping our club rid the deck of a person who shouldn't have been there. And I have one small favor to ask: The individual referred to is still listed prominently in the history section of his previous club. There it states that "Late in 2005 A.... B.... was forced to resign because of a family emergency." This is simply not true, and in light of the pain this individual caused, I feel his name should be removed entirely, or should at least be altered to reflect the real reason this coach was forced to resign, and that the individual is currently banned for life from USA Swimming. Thanks again, and please don't hesitate to call or email me if you need anything further.
