Olympic Trials Day 6 and 7July 7, 2008 The Olympic Trials are over and we have several weeks to wait for another exciting week of swimming to begin. While Oregon had no swimmers on the final day of swimming, days six and seven of the eight day meet saw a new Oregon record and several second swims from Oregon swimmers. Morgon Scroggy of THSC just missed the Open 200 backstroke of 2:12.40 record in the prelims with her 2:13.52. Morgan placed 16th and earned a trip to the semi-final. During the semi-final Morgan dropped over two seconds swimming 2:11.36 and took the Oregon record held by 1994 World Championships team member Rachel Joseph. More impressive is her time bumped her up 8 places and earned trip to the final, the only OSI swimmer to do so. During the final, Morgan couldn't quite match her semi-final time and swam 2:12.89 for eighth place. Logan Madson of BEND placed 16th in the 100 fly, making him the only OSI man to earn a second swim. His time of 53.49 just missed the OSI record of 2004 Olympian Igor Marchenko which stands at 53.30. Logan placed 16th in the semi-final with a 53.97. Emile Ewing of Auburn/THSC also earned a second swim in the 200 back with her 11th place swim of 2:12.88. New Records and Trial Cuts Set at Howard Jones MeetJune 27, 2008 The Howard Jones Memorial meet held at Mt. Hood Community College saw many new OSI records as swimmers tried to make cuts for the Olympic Trials. Grace Carlson of Lake Oswego bettered her own 11-12 50 free record three times, getting closer to the Trials cut with each swim. She swam 26.60, 26.45 and finally 26.39. The Olympic Trials cut is 26.39, so Grace earned a trip to the Olympic Trials with the barest of margins. Grace also became the first 11-12 Oregon girl to swim the 100 freestyle in under a minute. She bettered Tori Simenec's 2005 record twice. First with a 58.29 and then again with a 58.14. Grace's final record came in the 50 fly. Once again, she bettered Tori's 2005 record with a time of 29.44 to Tori's 29.65. Kathleen McCarroll of THSC continued her assault on the 11-12 200 fly record as she once again lowered her own record. She swam 2:24.69 at Mt. Hood bettering the old time of 2:25.34. Karen Turner of Lake Oswego bettered two of her own records. She just missed the Olympic Trials cut in the 50 free when she swam 26.45, taking four one-hundredths of a second off her old time. Karen swam the 200 IM twice at the meet, first swimming 2:20.81 to better her old time of 2:20.90. She next swam the IM again in the pursuit of the Trials cut. She swam 2:20.19, dropping under the qualifying time of 2:20.49. Lake Oswego Boys bettered the 13-14 boys relay. The team of Daniel Chen, Nick Bode, Alex Lyons and Gunnar Wolfe swam 4:19.64 bettering the 2006 record of 4:23.06 held by Tualatin Hills. The same team bettered the 13-14 400 free relay with a time of 3:49.91. The time betters the 2006 Tualatin Hills record of 3:55.96. Out of State MeetsMay 24, 2008 With the Summer season in full swing, many teams travel outside Oregon for swim meets. As in previous years, Oregon Swimming asks that an email be sent to Robbert van Andel with a link to the results or the name and date of the meet. This information will allow the meets to be added to the Oregon Swimming times database as well as allow OSI to find and publish new records in a timely manner.
