BC Camp in Forest Grove on May 1April 22, 2010 There will be a BC Camp at the Forest Grove Pool on May 1 with George Sampson. The camp is open to athletes registered with Oregon Swimming and have not achieved an "A" time. There is no cost for the camp. Contact George Sampson no later than Wednesday Arpil 28 at sammyboathead@verizon.net if you are interested. BC Camps in April and MayApril 15, 2010 3 BC Camps are scheduled for April 24 from 9AM - Noon at the Tualatin High School Pool with Jeanine Serrano, at the Lewis and Clark Pool with Nacim Bouferrache. Stroke and Turn Clinic in SalemApril 13, 2010 There will be a stroke and turn clinic in Salem on Tuesday April 20 from 5-7:30PM. Referee needed for Summer Blast SeriesApril 13, 2010 Chehalem Swim Team will be hosting the Summer Blast Invitational Series at the MHCC Pool, The meets are held on Saturday evening from 5:0o-10:00OM on June 5 and 26, July 17 and August 7. They are looking for a referee. If you are interested contact George Sampson at sammyboathead@verizon.net. Site Selection Vote OpensApril 12, 2010 This year, Oregon teams are asked to vote on one meet, the 11 & Over Championships. Two teams have placed bids to host the meet out of Amazon Pool in Eugene. Oregon Swimming sent an email to each team's representative to cast a vote. If your team did not receive the email, please contact the office. Memo from Chuck Wielgus, Executive Director of USA SwimmingApril 11, 2010 TO: All USA Swimming Member Coaches In recent days our sport has been portrayed in a very bad light in the media. Sadly, I have also been portrayed as an insensitive, uncaring administrator and spokesperson for USA Swimming. There are pieces of the recent 20/20 interview that I’d like to have back, there were important things left out, and there were pieces of the report that were untrue. As a father myself, it breaks my heart to know that there are children out there who have been taken advantage of by their coaches or others in positions of trust. It reminded me to sit down with my daughters and have a very frank but very important discussion about boundaries and appropriate behavior. I also am extremely sorry if our organization has not done enough to provide the highest level of child protection safeguards and guidelines. We cannot shy away from this issue and we are going to need your help and participation. I want to encourage you to be proactive in addressing this topic with the young athletes, parents and other coaches with whom you work. As a starting point, here are some very important factors to consider:
In addition to these safeguards, we are continually studying what other youth- serving organizations are doing to determine if there are other safeguards that could enhance our child protection efforts. Two items that are under immediate consideration are:
