More Records Fall at Junior Nationals

August 15, 2009

The final "big meet" of the season produced several more Oregon records. Kaylin Bing of Roseburg bettered both the 15-16 girls 50 and 100 freestyle records. She swam 25.77 to lower her 25.98 set at the US Open last week. The time is 27 one-hundredths of a second away from the listed National Age Group Record. She tied Lauren Thies' 1995 record in the 100 freestyle with a 56.48. This time earned Lauren a National Championship that year.

Jacob Pebley of Corvallis lowered Whitney Woolard's 15-16 100 backstroke record of 56.16 set in 1992. Jacob stopped the clock at 57.72. He next lowered the 200 backstroke record by over a second. In the prelims, Jacob swam 2:02.74 to better Austin Ringquist's 2:03.66 set at the US Open. In the finals, brought the time down to 2:02.33.

Neil O'Halloran kept the assault on the 15-16 100 fly record going, lowering the time for the fifth time this season. He stopped the clock at 53.31 to better his 53.66 set last week at the US Open. The time just missed the Open record held by 2004 Olympian Igor Marchenko, who owns the record at 53.30. Amazingly, the 15-16 record began the Long Course season at 56.76 and is only 33 one-hundredths of a second away from the listed National Age Group record held by none other than Michael Phelps. Neil also bettered Paul Ely's 15-16 200 fly record twice. In prelims, Neil swam 2:02.93 to erase Paul's time of 2:03.33 set in 1998. Then in the finals, Neil stopped the clock at 2:01.45.
