Karen Turner Sets OSI Record on Day One of NationalsNovember 29, 2007 USA Swimming's 2007 Short Course Nationals got off to a fast start for Oregon Swimming. Karen Turner, of Lake Oswego, lowered the 13-14 50 freestyle record, swimming the race in 23.65. Tori Simenec held the previous record at 23.75, set earlier this year. Other Oregon swimmers competing today include Laura Miller of David Douglas in the 50 free (23.64), Brett Nagle also of David Douglas in the 500 freestyle (4:32.00) and Mailene Leslie of Corvallis in the 500 free (5:03.98). Ryan Lochte Swim ClinicNovember 27, 2007 Olympic gold medalist, Ryan Lochte will be conducting both a kids and Masters swim clinic at the Sylvania Campus of PCC December 14, 15, and 16. Ryan's accomplishments include:
The kids' clinic will be held Friday, December 14 - 5 to 8 PM, Saturday, December 15 - 9 to 3 PM, and Sunday, December 16 - 9 to 12 PM. There will be a special Parents session offered on Sunday, December 16, 11:00 to 12:00 PM. Cost is $170.00 per swimmer. The Masters Clinic will be held on Sunday, December 16, 1:00 to 3:00 PM. For more information contact Tom Weltcheck at coachtom1@comcast.net Matt Oka, Former THSC/LOSC Swimmer, Recovering from Broken NeckNovember 26, 2007 Matt Oka, a 21 year old swimmer, who swam with Tualatin Hills Swim Club and Lake Oswego Swim Club, recently suffered a broken neck. The accident, which has left much of his body paralyzed, happened when he dove into the ocean and hit a sandbar. The local Newport Beach newspaper has an article about his accident. His family has also set up a website asking for donations to assist in Matt's recovery. Travel Reimbursements Changes AnnouncedNovember 20, 2007 During the November board meeting, the OSI Board passed a motion that, effective immediately, no travel reimbursement for Tier I,II or III will be paid unless receipts are submitted along with the travel reimbursement form to the OSI office. A further motion was passed that Tier III travel reimbursement will not be paid for meets held in Oregon. National Board of Review Decision Regarding Joseph CondorelliNovember 7, 2007 The National Board of Review for USA Swimming meet on October 25, 2007 to review the appeal by Joseph Condorelli (the Respondent) in the matter of the Oregon Swimming Board of Review decision. The following is a summary of the BOR ruling: "...the Decision of the OSI BOR should be and is hereby affirmed, except the penalties assessed against Respondent in paragraphs 1, 2 and 4 of the Decision are hereby modified as follows: (i) for a period of twelve (12) months, commencing November 1, 2007 and ending October 31, 2008, Respondent is hereby prohibited from attending (i.e., being present in the swimming venue or associated areas used in connection with the meet and under the control of the host club/organization, including without limitation pool deck, spectator seating, warm-up /warm-down facilities, athlete rest areas, concessions areas, rest rooms and parking lots) in any capacity whatsoever, including without limitation as a coach, parent or spectator, any USA Swimming sanctioned meet, regardless of its location inside or outside the Oregon Swimming boundaries, and this order shall, accordingly, constitute a trespass order against Respondent on such terms; (ii) Respondent is hereby expelled indefinitely from membership (in any category) in USA Swimming, subject to the right of reapplication on and after November 1, 2011..."
