YSC's Alice Luo Sets World Record

Alice Luo of the YAWAMA Dragons recently set the world record in the SM5 200 Individual Medley while swimming at the 2009 IPC Short Course World Championships. She also won the silver medal in the 100 breast and finalled in the 50 and 100 Free. Congratulations to Alice for a great job.

Karen Turner and Jacob Pebley Lower OSI Records at Junior Nationals

The backstroke and IM records took a beating at the USA Swimming's Junior Nationals, held in Columbus, Ohio. 

Karen Turner of Lake Oswego set an amazing 8 records at the meet.  She twice bettered the 15-16 backstroke record. In prelims, she bettered Tammy Shannon's 1991 record of 55.81 stopping the clock at 55.12. Then in finals, she dropped almost a full second to finish at 54.16. Her final time broke Morgan Scroggy's Open women backstroke record of 54.54. In the 200 backstroke, Karen broke Sarah Cruzan's 2009 record of 1:59.37 with the slimmest of margins, swimming the distance in 1:59.36.  Karen twice broke the 15-16 girls and open women's 200 IM. In prelims she swam the event in 2:00.43, bettering Tori Simemec's 15-16 record of 2:01.45 and Becky Gumpert's 1993 Open record of 2:01.24. In finals, Karen became the first Oregon girl to do under 2:00 in the 200 IM, stopping the clock at 1:59.36.

Jacob Pebley of Corvallis set two 15-16 records at the meet. In the 100 backstroke, he swam 49.77 to beat Will Gunderson's 2009 record of 49.93. In the 200 IM, he beat another Will Gunderson record, swimming 1:50.41 to Will's 1:50.87

Officials needed for Canby Animal Meet

Travel reimbursement applications

All reimbursement applications for Junior Nationals and Nationals are due in the office within 30 days of the end of the meet.  Travel reimbursement.xls must be submitted along with the receipts. For short course National meets athletes have until the end of the short course season to participate in the 3 required Oregon Swimming Meets.  Payment will be sent as soon as the requirements are met. 

OSI Records Set at SC Nationals

The 2009 SC Nationals in Federal Way was held in Federal Way December 3 through 5. Three Oregon swimmers set 6 records between them. Kaylin Bing of Roseburg swam the 50 free in 22.85, bettering her own 15-16 girls record of 22.92. She just missed the old record in finals, swimming 22.93. Neil O'Halloran, fresh off his stint at the World Cup meets in Europe last month, bettered the boys 15-16 100 butterfly record twice. In Prelims he swam 48.77 to lower Will Gunderson's 48.99. In finals, that evening, Neil lowered the record another 17 hundredths of a second, stopping the clock at 48.60

Tori Simenec, of BearCat Swim Club, set half the LSC records at the meet. She lowered Kristin Kilroy's 2002 17-18 100 fly record twice, first with a 54.22, and then again in finals with a 54.02. Tori also bettered Kristin's 200 fly record, swimming 1:59.14 in prelims, becoming the first 17-18 year old girl to swim under two minutes in the 200 fly. Tori also went under the old record in finals with a 1:59.74.

Oregon was well represented in the finals, as several swimmers earned a second swim. Kaylin and Tori placed in the 50 free, earning 10th and 15th respectively. They both earned second swims in the 100 free, with Tori placing 14th with 50.57, just edging out Kaylin, who placed 15th with a 50.63.

Tori also placed 12th in the 200 free (1:47.25), 20th in the 500 free (4:49.63), 8th in the 100 fly, 13th in the 200 fly,

Jenni Stratton of Mt. Hood, placed 23rd in the 500 free, swimming 4:51.56.

Oregon State University, a registered club with Oreogn this year, placed several swimmers in finals. Jenni Dole placed 15th in the 100 backstroke, swimming 55.44 and 20th in the 200 backstroke, swimming 2:00.53. Anna Heller, formerly of HEAT, placed 22nd in the 100 back, swimming 55.77 and 22nd in the 200 back, swimming 2:02.07. Ellen Bradley, placed 24th in the 200 breast, swimming 2:20.65. OSU's 200 free relay team of Ashley Kerekanich, Jenni Dole, Brittney Iverson, and Anna Crandal placed 7th with a time of 1:34.20. Their 800 free relay team of Katherine Hagan, Anna Crandall, Brittney Iverson and Rachel O'Brien placed 15th with a time of 7:28.90. Jenni Dole, Anna Larson, Anna Crandall and Ashley Kerekanich placed 8th in the 200 medley relay and in the 400 medley, the team of Jenni Dole, Anna Larson, Rachel O'Brien and Anna Crandall placed 10th with a 3:43.99. The B relay of Anna Heller, Ellen Bradley, Brittney Iverson and Arianna Gorenc placed 15th with a 3:49.24.

The boys also did their share in representing Oregon. Nicolas Morrell of Bend, placed 22nd in the 200 free, swimming 1:39.76, and 18th in the 500 free (4:27.47).

Eetu Karvonen, of Multnomah Athletic Club, placed 14th in the 200 breast, just missing the magic two minute barrier with a 2:00.51.

Neil's 100 butterfly time earned him 14th place. He also placed 22nd in the 200 fly with a 1:51.00.

Officials needed for TTSC Holiday Invite

TTSC is hosting the Holiday Invite on Saturday, December 12 and Sunday December 13, at the Tualatin pool. Warm-ups begin at 7:30 am both days for the 11 and under sessions and at noon on Saturday and 11 am on Sunday for the 12 and over sessions. We are in need of certified officials, especially for the afternoon session on Sunday. If you can help, please contact Tami Smith at dtm.smith3@verizon.net.

All Star Applications are due Monday December 14

Reminder:  All Star applications for the 2010Pacific Coast All Star Meet in Cerritos, California must be received in the Oregon Swimming Office no later than Noon, Monday December 14, 2009.
Athletes with Age Group Sectional qualifying times and are between 11 and 14 years old are encouraged to apply for this meet.
